The learner will: 1) Browse the NC Wise Owl Database for academic sources and learning tools. 2) Distinguish the difference between various print and electronic sources 3) Define citation and plagiarism. 4) Produce a sample citation for a bibliography page.
Materials:
World Book Encyclopedias, Smart Board/ LCD projector, Web Page Handouts
Introduction:
"What is Citation? Has anyone ever heard the word used? What are some other names for a citation page?" Ex. Works Cited, References, Bibliography.
Development:
Teacher will give formal definition of plagiarism and tell that an example of plagiarism is when "students simply copy and paste information from the Internet, then put their name on it." Students will also be guided on how to access the NC Wise Database and the website "Citation Maker."
Practice:
Students will view and give input while a sample citation is created on the board using a predetermined web source.
Accommodations:
Some students will use paper and pencil to write out their citation using the worksheet form of Citation Maker.
Checking For Understanding:
Teacher will assist individual students with creating and formatting their citations. A correct sample student citation will also be shown for students to refer to.
Closure:
"You have now created your 1st citation on your sample Bibliography Page." Students will then print out page or save the page to their student folder on the Student Drive.
Evaluation:
Each student citation will be graded and posted for the class to see what the proper format should look like. Students who did not achieve the correct format will have a chance to redo their citation.
Teacher Reflections:
After teaching this lesson, I realize that it is most important to make sure that every student has a chance to complete the task of printing out the citation, in order that they will feel a sense of accomplishment.
