Objectives: | Students will travel to the Duche' de Coeur in Second Life to study the merchant shops. Student will collect 3 photographs of costume and analyze them for authenticity. |
Materials: | Powerpoint, Internet connection, Second Life account. |
Introduction: | Background information of the Northern Renaissance. (through Powerpoint) Originally the areas of Italy, Spain, Germany, & France were ruled by Charles V. Henry VIII (England) reign saw beginning of Renaissance Elizabeth�s (England) reign saw height:a true patron of the arts theatre, music, painters, sculptors Francis I (1515-1547) also began renaissance in the arts Henry II (son) married Catherine de Medici de Medici credited with beginning French perfume industry. Under the reign of Henry IV(1589-1610), French industry, especially cloth, prospered from linen & silk weaving Intermarriage between royal families Travel between Northern countries, with imported garments, fabrics. & books Internationalization of styles occurred Trade with Orient from merchants, diplomats, travelers Treadle-powered spinning wheel Hand-knitting Invention of knitting machine for stockings (inventor William Lee, turned down for patent in England, took it to France) Women's Costume Undergarments: previously worn for warmth, protection, & perspiration, now being worn for body & garment shaping. 1500-1530 Dresses: single or outer & underdress plain, somber colors, fitted bodices, skirts long & full w/trailing trains sleeves: narrow, wide funnel, hanging Mantle and Cloaks 1530-1575Dresses: petticoat (underskirt): but quite visible under skirt through V skirt front overdress: supported by verdugale or Spanish farthingale-- graduated hoops sewn into petticoat or underskirt Hourglass silhouette skirts often had inverted V in front 1575-1600Dresses: Shape of skirt changed: now wider at top Bum rolls: padded rolled placed around waist French farthingale: now hoops of same size One piece or with petticoat (underskirt) Sleeves made fuller with very high sleeve caps Deepened V-front Standing collars |
Development: | The "Duch� de Coeur" is a Second Life virtual world located in southern France during the 17th/18th century (1600's & 1700's) |
Practice: | Students will be exposed to the background information. They will then follow the instructor to the Second Life world. In groups of 2, they will be instructed to stroll into the different shops in order to gather information on the costumes. |
Accommodations: | Students with special needs will be accommodated accordingly. |
Checking For Understanding: | Students will write a short paragraph of each garment photograph as well as a reflection of their experience. |
Closure: | Groups will be able to present 1 picture to the class for dissemination. |
