Content: | Becoming familiar with the Vietnam War and the culture/music sourrounding that time. |
Goals: | 1. Students should be able to understand the emotions that came from the soldiers, family, and friends, while listening to the war songs of Vietnam. 2. Students should be able to understand the way that specific lyrics, and rythm can portray and bring out emotions. |
Objectives: | 1. Students should learn an appreciation for music that brings out emotions either possitive or negative. 2. Students should learn about the Vietnam War, while gaining an appreciation for the music that was made during that time period. 3. Students should be able to listen to a song and understand what type of emotion the song is portraying. 4. Students should have a greater appreciation for their country. |
Materials: | 1. Atleast 3-5 songs from the 60's, that were made during the Vietnam war. 2. Computer. 3. Pictures of the 60's time era. 4. Maybe bell-bottoms,beads,peace sign jewelry, big circular glasses. 5. Articles to explain the emotion that were put into each song. Reasons why each song was made. |
Introduction: | Play some the songs, and have the students explain what type of emotions they feel are coming from the words, as well as the rythm and beat. Then explain a bit to them, about why the Vietnam War took place, as well as why people felt so strongly enough to creat these songs. |
Development: | Play the songs and have the students journal about the emotions that are evoked inside of them while listening to it. Then explain how those feelings correlate with those of the feeling that the people had during the time of the Vietnam War. |
Practice: | 1. Have the students look up songs in a lab and write a small paper on the emotions they feel are coming from the song. 2. Have the students get in groups to present some information about the Vietnam War, and play their favorite war song with some explanation. |
Accommodations: | 1. For those who are hearing impaired you could give them lyrics to read, or strongly express some of the emotions in the song with your face. |
Checking For Understanding: | 1. Can the student pick out songs that they know presently evoke emotions regarding their country? 2. Do the students seem to have an appreciation for the music, during the Vietnam era? 3. Can the students tell me facts regarding Vietnam? 4. Can the students pick their own song from the 60's and explain to me some of the emotions portrayed throught the lyrics. |
Closure: | Briefly overview the War that is going on in our own world today, and how we can release our emotions of the present struggles through music. |
Evaluation: | 1. Students should be able to express their emotions through music. 2. Students should be familiar with the Vietnam War, and the culture of that time era. |
