Goals: | Students will understand how to use the comprehensive:skill drawing conclusions(by gathering information about how characters act, what they say and when and where the story takes place) to make statements about story characters and events. |
Objectives: | Students will use the comprehension skill Drawing Conclusions as they read the story the second time. |
Materials: | Comprehension and Language arts skills w.s. |
Introduction: | After read, introduce a graphic organizer to the students that can be used for identifying clues from the text to draw conclusions about each character.Explain each part of the graphic organizer-located on pg. 33c of teacher book. |
Development: | Display this G.O. on the board and begin by discussing one character from the selection and filling in the chart with the appropriate information. Discuss each clue and what it told us about the character. Have students also use context clues to support and explain each conclusion. |
Practice: | Have students complete a chart for the remaining characters, review and discuss each one as a class. |

Checking For Understanding: | Write the following words on a piece of paper: generous, kind, happy, selfish, afraid, lonely, talkative, unhappy. Then students choose 1 word from a bag, write it down, and replace it. They should write a paragraph about a character that possesses the chosen trait, they cannot state that trait. Have students exchange papers and draw conclusions about the traits presented. |
Closure: | Review lesson and make sure students have good understanding of drawing conclusions. Remind them to complete homework assignment. |
