Introduction: | Gather group together and ask them what they know about spreadsheets: Who has used a spreadsheet before? What have you done with it? How is it arranged? What is one program that you know of that is a spreadsheet? Ask other questions as the ones above lead to others. Don't give answers, if they don't have the answer, let them know they will be learning about it when they view the slide show. |
Development: | Explain to the students that they will be watching the slide show and filling in information on the "Parts of a Spreadsheet" handout. The front of the handout is filled in while viewing slides 1 - 13. Once they reach slide 14, they will open the packet and answer the questions inside of the packet: Part Two: Self Assessment. Tell them it should be treated as a quiz. There should be no talking and no helping each other. Let them know that you are available to answer any questions or clarify any information for them. They specifically may need help with questions 6 and 7. |
Practice: | 1. Double click on the Macintosh HD. 2. Double click on the Class Documents folder. 3. Double click on SS_Presentation.pps 4. Follow the directions on the screen to fill in the appropriate information and answer the questions. 5. Pass in the packet at the end of class. |

Checking For Understanding: | Once all students are done with the activity, gather the class together as a group and ask the following questions: 1. What can spreadsheets be used for? 2. What do you call the location where a column and a row meet? 3. What do you call the cell that is currently selected? 4. Where can you see the active cell name displayed? 5. What do you call a group of cells? 6. If columns b - D and rows 3 - 11 are highlighted, what is the cell range? 7. What is the difference between a label and a value? 8. What is the difference between a formula and a function? |
