Goals:
 The students will: *define adjective *correctly identify adjectives in a story *compile a list of adjectives to be used in narrative writing *correctly use adjectives in narrative writing
Objectives:
 4.06 Compose a draft that conveys major ideas and maintains focus on the topic with specific, relevant, supporting details by using preliminary plans. 4.07 Compose fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama using self-selected and assigned topics and forms (e.g., personal and imaginative narratives, research reports, diaries, journals, logs, rules, instructions). 4.08 Focus revision on a specific element such as: word choice. sequence of events and ideas. 4.09 Produce work that follows the conventions of particular genres (e.g., personal and imaginative narrative, research reports, learning logs, letters of request, letters of complaint).
Materials:
 Notebook Paper Pencil Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes Butcher Paper Permanent Marker
Introduction:
 Students will round table their personal definition of adjectives, then groups share ideas.
Development:
 1)The teacher will define an adjective and discuss the purpose of adjectives in writing. 2)The teacher will tell students that while he/she is reading the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes that they are to write down the adjectives they hear in the story on a piece of notebook paper.
Practice:
 1)The teacher will read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes at an appropriate pace so that students may create their adjective (sparkle word) list.
Accommodations:
 Special Needs Students: Will be given a copy of Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes so that they can highlight the adjectives when they hear them in the story. Gifted Students: Will be asked to create a list of a minimum of 8 additional adjectives that are not listed in the story that could be used to describe the characters or situations presented.
Checking For Understanding:
 The teacher will circulate through the room checking individual student lists for understanding, answering questions when needed.
Closure:
 1)Students will rally robin their list of adjectives with their shoulder buddy adding additional adjectives they do not have on their lists. 2) Pairs will then share 3 of the adjectives on their lists with the class. The teacher will add them to the class list, on butcher paper, in the front of the room.
Evaluation:
 The teacher will assign a new narrative writing prompt in which the students must use a minimum of 10 of the adjectives corrctly in their narrative. The teacher will read the narrative to check adjective use.
