 Learning Math through ancient civilizations, world geography, and cultural games and brainteasers.
Content:
  The African/Nubian Experience (2 lessons)
Goals:
  To introduce and educate the students on the contributions of the African continent on the areas of Math and Social Studies. To understand how the populations indigenous to this continent passed on history through oration, and computed and problem solved. To weave both Social studies and math, by mastering an ancient form of tic tac toe.
Objectives:
  To effectively teach this lesson through the usage of handouts, African fables, brain teasers, and workboots. To have the students interract and receive the lessons, well. To keep focus, attentiveness and good behavior in the classrooms.
Materials:
  Overhead projector. Dry erase board.
Introduction:
  Using notes and handouts, give a brief summary of African/Nubian life before colonization and the Middle Passage. Describe Kingdoms, Rulers, Breakdown of empires, and contributions of science, math and language.
Development:
 (Math Around the World - pages 135-137 - to be printed and duplicated) Write down fables and parables used by African/Nubian tribes and communities. Introduce the two unique versions of Men's Morris. (Three and Nine) which are analytical strategy games that predate tic-tac-toe.
Practice:
 Use Teen Staff as examples for demonstrating the two versions. These games compare the advantages and disadvantages of moving pieces, they anticipate their opponents' moves and they think ahead, deciding whether to block an opponent or to form a winning formation.
Accommodations:
 
Checking For Understanding:
  Bring the students back to a main grouping. Have Teen Staff facilitate how the asignment went, and whether it was productive and fun. How are principles of Math involved in this exercise? How might this have helped African/Nubian culture as a whole?
Closure:
  After cleaning up supplies and materials, have students write a quick feedback to the lessons and the activities. Have them also complete a Do-Now sheet. Turn in both to the Teen Staff.
