Goals: | SWBAT: 1. Be aware that direct quotes require specific punctuation. 2. Understand when and how to use approrpiate punctuation for direct quotes. 3. Students will show ability through completing sentences that use direct quotes. |
Objectives: | To help students to recognize the importance of punctuation and the various uses of punctuation marks within direct quotes. This also encourages cooperation within a group and self-checking skills. |
Materials: | 1. Sentence strips prepared with sentence parts on them. Separate the direct quote in the sentence from the other words in the sentence. For example: Strip #1a Mother said Strip #1b Will you help me with this 2. Index cards: Make two cards with a period, 5 or 6 with a comma, several quotation marks (make ones for the beginning of the quote and separate ones for the end of the quote), two question marks, and two exclamation points. |
Introduction: | Ask a few students some questions. Write down the responses on the board, using quotations and appropriate punctuation. Ask the students questions about what the various punctuation marks. Discuss why we use quotations and how to use punctuation with them. |
Development: | Complete #1 with the class. |
Practice: | Choose several students to stand at the front of the classroom holding the sentence strips for one sentence. Have another student choose a card for one of the punctuation marks and stand next to the students with the sentence strips. They are to line up in the order that the sentence would be written on paper. Continue having students choose and place the cards needed for punctuation until the sentence has been completed. Have the class agree or disagree with the placements. Repeat the process with a variety of sentences. |
Accommodations: | Students who are having trouble will continue to work in a small group with Ms. Kurtz. |
Checking For Understanding: | Students will trade their independent work with the person next to them and will review their peer's work. |
Closure: | Brief group discussion about lesson. Give students the opportunity to express what they think worked and didn't work with the lesson. |
Evaluation: | Other than observing students throughout the lesson, I will collect the independent work of the students and ensure that they completed them correctly. |
