Content: | The students will learn what and allergy is and why some people have them. Common allergies will be discussed, with special focus on peanut allergies. They will also learn what type of reactions can be expected, ranging from mild to severe. There will be an explanation of what anaphylactic reactions are and why EpiPens� are used to treat these reactions. They will also learn the acronym F.A.S.T. used to recognize anaphylaxis. Key words: Allergy, anaphylaxis, F.A.S.T. and EpiPen�. |
Goals: | The students will have a greater understanding of what an allergy is and the difference between a mild and a severe allergy. They will also become familiar with an EpiPen� and why people need them. |
Objectives: | 1) Students will demonstrate understanding of what an allergic reaction looks like through responses to scenarios given by the end of the presentation. 2) Students will be comfortable on determining when themselves or classmates are having an allergic reaction and obtaining the proper help from adults in these situations by the end of the presentation. 3) Students will be able to state reasons why their school should be kept peanut aware by the end of the presentation. |
Materials: | Overhead Projector, Overheads supplied by the Health Centre, EpiPen� trainers supplied by the Health Centre, Allergy handouts, Scenario cards, Whiteboard, whiteboard markers, F.A.S.T. posters |
Introduction: | 1) Ask students if they, or someone they know, have an allergy; what the allergy is and what types of reactions are present with the allergy 2) Discuss with children what an allergy is and lead into discussion topics. |
Development: | Information will be delivered in a variety of ways. Overheads, posters, and board writing will be used for visual learners. Lecture and discussion will be used to cover the auditory domain of learning and visual use of the EPiPen� will be utilized for kinaesthetic learners. |
Practice: | Scenarios will be given to the children where they will determine whether signs and symptoms of the characters mentioned in the scenarios are indicative of a mild or severe reaction. |

Checking For Understanding: | At the end of presentation assess children's understanding of the presented topic by giving them time for a question period to the student nurses. Ask the children during this time if they feel more confident in their understanding of what an allergy is and some expected reactions. Assess their level of confidence in understanding what an EpiPen� is and why people need it. Ensure children understand when they need to call on adults for help in emergency allergic reactions. |
Closure: | Give allergy handouts and posters to the teachers and explain to children what the handouts contain. Also, will touch on the helpfulness of the websites listed on the back for more information. |
Evaluation: | The children will express a further understanding of the topic material after the presentation. Their questions will reflect on whether or not the topic was covered in an appropriate fashion for this group. Teachers will be questioned on how they thought the children responded to the presentation. |
