Goals:
 Students to become familiar with the artist Salvador Dali and other artists. For students to gain an appreciation for art and be able to express their opinion about different works of art both orally and written.
Objectives:
 Language and Skills 1)Vocabulary (New words can be recycled throughout the unit) Words to describe paintings and express opinions. 2)Speaking and conversation practice-Expressing opinion and giving evidence to support it. 3) Creative Writing 4)Listening 5) Practice of Internet Skills Culture 1)Students will learn about some famous Western artists and their works. 2)As students learn about the ideas behind the art they learn something about Western thought and culture.
Materials:
 9 paintings of Salvador Dali, pen/paper/dictionaries, internet connection/computers,virtual tour worksheet Websites: Metropolitan Museum of Art(New York). www.metmuseum.org Museum of Modern Art (New York). http://www.moma.org
Introduction:
 Before students enter the room have the 9 paintings by Salvador Dali around the room. Have the word Art Gallery written on the board. Tell students that today we are going to visit an art gallery. Ask students if they have been to an art gallery/museum. Where? When? What did they see? Did they enjoy it? Have students get up and walk around classroom looking at the paintings. Give them enough time to look and discuss. Go around room and initiate conversation with the students about the paintings. Have students sit down and ask them questions about the paintings. Which one is their favorite? Why? Do they understand the painting? Do they think it is good?
Development:
 Group the students ( ideally into groups of those whose favorite painting is the same). Have them look at the painter in greater detail and using their dictionaries write 10 words or phrases that describe the painting.
Practice:
 Day 2-Individually (using the list of 10 words and phrases for help) students will write a paragraph about their favorite picture. It will be 100-120 words and include a description of the painting, an explanation why it is their favorite, and also why they think Salvador Dali painted the picture. Students will use one class period and also complete the assignment for homework.

Checking For Understanding:
 Assessment will be based on class participation, successful completion of the writing assignment and virtual tour worksheet. I will use the class participation ruberic as well as the writing rubric.
Closure:
 To wrap up the unit we will discuss their findings from the virtual tour website. Other questions that can be asked: Have your attitudes towards modern/contemporary art changed in any way since the beginning of this unit? For example, do you like it more/less? Do you understand it better? Do you think it is worthwhile or not? Does it make you think?
Evaluation:
 By using the rubrics and also through observation I will evaluate students' progress and level of understanding of the assigments given.
