Content:
 Vocabulary related to geographic characteristics of Spain. The use of the verb "estar" with locations and the verbs "hallar", "encountrar", "ubicar" to express locations. The artistic contributions of Celia Cruz, her life and her music.
Goals:
 Students will be able to: 1. Increase working vocabulary in Spanish by 35-60 words, expressions and recombinations in relation to the geography of Spain, the life of Celia Cruz and the song "La negra tiene tumbao". 2. Refine skill in describing locations of places and things used in Spain.
Objectives:
 Given practice with interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication students will correctly express: 1. Geographical information about Spain and it's surroundings and avoid overuse of the verb "estar". 2. Three important facts about the life and works of Celia Cruz.
Materials:
 Maps of Spain, Products from Spain, transparencies of Spain, handouts of expressions in gallego, euskara and catalan, bulletin board dedicated to Celia Cruz, CD of song "La negra tiene tumbao" and corresponding music video taped from HTV, puzzle piece lyrics of song.
Introduction:
 Identify the regions of Spain and other geographic characteristics such as mountains, rivers, territories, surrounding waters and countries, languages islands etc. on maps. Describe where things are on the map of Spain using "estar", "ubicar", "encontrar.
Development:
 Demonstrate products from Spain and describe. Students take notes and draw items in their maps of Spain in correct location. Explain how to avoid overuse of "estar" using other verbs. Students expand on examples in peer groups. Investigate the life of Celia Cruz.
Practice:
 Listen to the song again and place the puzzle piece lyrics in their correct order. Discuss the meaning of certain colloquial expressions in the lyrics as a large group. Describe the geography of Spain using "estar" and other verbs verbally and in writing.
Accommodations:
 Listening to song activities for auditory learners. Arrangement of puzzle pieces and TRP with maps for kinesthetic learners. Photos, captions, video for visual learners.
Checking For Understanding:
 Daily review of geography and vocabulary. Written work peer edited, rewritten and returned to students. Practice quizzes on the geography of Spain.
Closure:
 Read article from "People en espanol" issue dedicated to Celia Cruz and complete corresponding questions. Review music video and sing along.
Evaluation:
 Written and/or oral exams on the geography of Spain. Final composition about Celia Cruz graded. Daily homework given completion points.
