Content:
 -A study of the gilded age in NYC. -The rise of NYC's Knickerbockers and early prominent families. -New York's emergence as a cultural melting-pot. -The lesson will cover the years 1870-1900
Goals:
 -For students to have a better understanding of how NYC emerged as one of the most prominent cities in the world. -For students to interact through group work and via texting in order to have a better understanding of the subject matter. -To have a better understanding of New York's transition from 'old New York' to 'new New York.' -Understand the role NY played in the rapid economic growth of the gilded age.
Objectives:
  -The main objective is to give students a general understanding of one subject area, and then allow them to interact with one another to make sense of the topic. -To do so, I will text a question and/or picture message based on my history lesson and then ask students to respond via text message describing the history behind the picture I send or the answer to the question.
Materials:
 -Group work. -DVD Documentaries. -PowerPoint. -Smartphones. -SMS or MMS messaging.
Introduction:
 -The gilded age of NYC. -The rapid economic growth between the years 1870-1890. -The rise of varying cultures in NYC.
Development:
 -The lesson will be taught through a historical documentary discussing New York's gilded age. -If necessary, I will use a Powerpoint to reinforce the information covered in the documentary.
Practice:
 -Students will break off into groups of 3 or 4. -I will send each group a term, question or picture, and as a group they will discuss the text message and respond to me with their answer or response. -The quicker the better, it will be a competition!
Accommodations:
 -After each group responds, I will display my answer via Powerpoint and explain each answer.
Checking For Understanding:
 -Individuals will be asked to write a small overview on the lesson itself in a text message.
Closure:
 -The group with the highest score will receive a small prize.
Evaluation:
 -Students will be evaluated based on their work in groups. -The validity, creativeness and promptness of their response. -Their personal response (text message) to me describing the material content.
