 New York's early beginnings and its emergence as a cultural melting pot. We will be looking at the early Knickerbockers of the city which were the richest families of the time who lived in the upper parts of Manhattan and the tenements on the lower east side of Manhattan which were home to the poorest families.
Goals:
 The goals of this lesson plan are explore the early beginnings of NYC by sharing information with each other through text and picture messages. The main objective of my lesson is to get students engaged in learning by having them text information to each other and the teacher. The goal is for students to come away with a in depth understanding of the Knickerbocker era in NYC.
Objectives:
 The objective is to have students look at a picture of NYC that I send and explain to me through text message the history of that picture.
Materials:
 Smartphones, text messages and picture messages.
Introduction:
 A history of NYC between 1890-1920.
Development:
 We will be looking at the gilded age and rise of the 'Knickerbocker' in NYC through slide show and documentaries of the city.
Practice:
 After learning the history of this time, students will be sent a picture message and asked to respond via text message explaining the theme and history behind the picture. They will also be able to interact with one another in forming this answer.

Checking For Understanding:
 I will review each students response to my original question or picture to see how much information they gathered from our original lesson.
Closure:
 As a class, we will share our responses with each other in an open forum.
Evaluation:
 The students progress will be measured by how accurate and detailed their response is to my original text message. Also, the more creative the response is, the better.
