Lesson Plan : Rubber Band Racer

Teacher Name:
 Jeremy Detter
Grade:
 Grade 6
Subject:
 Other

Topic:
 The design process.
Content:
The NASA Design Process, Harley: The birth of the V:Rod.
Goals:
The goal will be for students to explain and apply the eight steps of the Design Process.
Objectives:

Materials:
YouTube, PowerPoint, Corrugated Cardboard, CD's or Yogurt cup lids, Skewers, Modeling clay, Electrical tape, Rubber bands, Paper clip.
Introduction:
The teacher will reinforce the students previous knowledge on the design process by asking students to account for each step learned.
Development:
The teacher will provide a short demonstration on how he built his rubber band car using the design process.
Practice:
Students will choose groups and begin to brainstorm ideas on how to build their car.
Accommodations:
Students with hearing and visual impairments will sit closer to the front of the classroom to see the demonstration better.
Checking For Understanding:
While students are working on their car the teacher will use different types of questioning strategies to assess how much prior knowledge the students have retained in connection to the design process.
Closure:
Finally, before wrapping up the design brief, the teacher will provide an overview of the material taught and summarize the importance of using the design process when engineering a project.
Evaluation:
The teacher will evaluate the students with written material and the use creativity in engineering their rubber band cars. The teacher will assess each group by having teams compete by seeing which car will travel farther. Students will also be graded on their ability to work together and the completion of their assigned work.
Teacher Reflections:
The teacher will reflect on the design brief after the lesson is complete.
