Teacher Name:
 Richard Burgin
Grade:
 Grade 9-10
Subject:
 Vocational Ed.

Topic:
 USB Technology
Content:
USB Terminology; USB applications within society; Types of devices utilising USB Technology; USB Memory devices; Danagers inherent in the USB memory devices Security precautions when using USB memory devices. Recovery steps when experiencing problems with USB memory devices.
Goals:
At the conclusion of today's session you will be able to: Define the term USB; Outline the purpose of the USB technology; List several devices that utilise USB technology; List how USB memory devices work; and List the steps to be taken to recover data from a faulty USB memory stick.
Objectives:
Basic understanding of the USB technology. Awareness of the application of USB technology in data storage. Benefits of USB memory storage over older technologies. Changes in versions of USB transfer rates and capacity of memory devices. Danagers of reliance upon USB memory devices. Simple steps that can be taken to minimise risk.
Materials:
USB Devices USB cables USB Memory devices and floppy disks Whiteboard Markers
Introduction:
Introduction and emphasis upon the proliferation of USB technologies within society. Its purpose and devices it supplanted. Dangers related to fragility and size of data storage.
Development:
Show USB devices List development of the technology Provide examples of the technology Outline the impact of progress 1.1'2.0 and 3.0 Explain the use of this technology in data storage Compare equalivalent data storage. List the dangers due to accidential loss, theft, washing machines, impact upon connectors, power surges, List prevenatives measures e.g. back-up, auto-syncing, encryption - Trucrypt List remedial measures e.g. recovery tools and basic structure of devices.
Practice:
During lesson 2 we will be: 1. recovering data from USB memory devices using recovery tool 2. encrypting data contained on a USB memory device 3. transferring files from USB memory devices using USB 1.1; 2.0 and 3.0 devices and computers with USB 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 technologies. 4. Breaking open a USB memory stick and recovery data via direct connection.
Accommodations:
Verbal questions; Visual demonstrations and practical exercises.
Checking For Understanding:
In class questioning. Multiple choice and short answer assessment.
Closure:
Emphasis of the double edged sword of USB. Offers massive data storage and widespread access points. Some minor areas of compatibility when it comes to improvements in the technology i.e. 1.1; 2.0 and 3.0. It is a simple technology that offers wonderful benefits and possible danagers if simple steps are not taken.
Evaluation:
Multiple choice and short answer assessment.
