 Terminology: attachment, kangaroo care, sensitivity, sensory, stimulation, auditory, disengagement cues, motor, proximal, distal,gross, fine, cold-pressed oils, potent, subtle, aversion, state
Goals:
 To practice infant massage techniques using a baby doll to gain hands-on experience.
Objectives:
 After viewing bonding and massage techniques on a video about Infant Massage Techniques and watching teacher demonstration of massage strokes, the student will imitate strokes to practice on a doll.
Materials:
 DVD player/TV , doll, blanket, massage oil, copies of handouts and American Baby Magazine Issue with photos of techniques.
Introduction:
 Discussion of bonding from previous lesson. Tell class what they need to gather to prepare for this lesson a day ahead of time.
Development:
 Examine materials related to the subject. View video excerpts then practice technique.
Practice:
 Legs and feet, chest and abdomen, arms and hands, face, back
Accommodations:
 Parent (student) will have to adapt their technique to size of their child. Points about age, mobility, mood etc. Understand that baby will not always respond favorably and that you adjust accordingly.
Checking For Understanding:
 Play Massage bingo using terminology to see if terms are understood.
Closure:
 Touch is just one way of communicating with a baby. Their other senses need to be stimulated also. We will be discussing other methods of sensory stimulation in future lessons.
Evaluation:
 Observation of student participation and performance of technique. Authentic assessment using practical exam vs. written test.
Teacher Reflections:
 Would like to have some real babies to demonstrate with but it is not possible at this time.
