Topic:

Content:
 safe and simple cooking, following directions, working independently/small groups
Goals:
 Students will learn to cook a grilled cheese and tomato soup lunch
Objectives:
 follow directions of recipe, demonstrate safe knife and cooking skills, time management, communication skills
Materials:
 recipe, timer, cheese, bread, butter, can of soup, stove, flipper, ladle, pan, pot, serving dishes, can opener
Introduction:
 Go around the group and talk about favourite foods - what do you like your parents to make? what do you know how to make? What safety precautions should we follow? Did we wash our hands?
Development:
 Students watch as instructor prepares sandwich on their own. Instructor narrates steps as they complete them.
Practice:
 In pairs, students work on knife skills - cutting cheese into thin slices safely. Students take turns using can opener. Students butter bread. Students take turns operating stove, putting sandwiches in pan and flipping after 5 minutes. Instructor watches soup and explains that we are waiting for it to simmer. Instructor watches students serve food.
Accommodations:
 ESL students would need recipe as simplified, extra help. Students with disabilities would need extra help/assistance. Some students may not be comfortable using a sharp knife - allow them to do what they can -- instructor can fix for cooking. Students don't need to operate stove if they aren't comfortable.
Checking For Understanding:
 Quiz students on recipe. Quiz students on safety. Go over hypotheticals: What would you do if sandwich started to burn? What would you do if you cut yourself?
Closure:
 Eat food as group. Is it tasty? Why is this a good recipie to use? What would you change in recipe the next time you make it? How could we make the recipe slightly more challenging?
Evaluation:
 Evaluate whether students used knives and other utensils and stove safely. Did they follow recipe? Did one student help the other when needed? Did they set a timer? Did they work safely and cleanly?
