Goals: | To be able to meditate for 10 minutes. |
Objectives: | Learn what mindfulness is, practice with an object, learn deep breathing techniques, and participate in a 10 minute meditation exercise. |
Materials: | Mindfulness video, an object(ie. piece of chocolate, grape, raisin), a chair, and ability to turn lights off. |
Introduction: | Mindfulness animation video |
Development: | Watch video, explain the definition. Then do a practical example with student participation (example: mindfully eating a raisin). Touching it, noticing all of the shapes and folds, what it smells like, what it looks like, and finally, what it tastes like. |
Practice: | Guided meditation for 3 minutes. (listening to a cd or audio file). This will teach some basic skills on deep breathing. |
Accommodations: | Slowly build on skills taught (ie. recognizing thoughts and feelings), acknowledging them, and gently return back to focusing on the breath. |
Checking For Understanding: | Notice who in the class is able to sit calmly, and those who arent able to close their eyes. Also ask about their experiences and gain feedback. |
Closure: | Meditation for 10 minutes. |
