Topic:
Learn the basic life skill of changing car rims.
Content:
How to properly remove a rim/tire, replace it, and ensure it is inflated to the proper level.
Goals:
The goal of this lesson is the ability to remove a rim/tire from a car and replace it in the safe and proper manner.
Objectives:
 - Know How to recognize a flat tire. - Recognize the correct place to jack up a car. - Learn the proper bolt pattern for removing and tightening lug nuts. - Know how to ensure the rim is in the correct position and mounted properly. - How to find proper psi level for car/tire.
Materials:
 - Car - Jack - Lug Wrench - Inflated Spare Tire - Tire Pressure Gauge.
Introduction:
Inquiring how many people in the audience have been in a car where the tire went flat, and the inconvenience of being stranded. As well as the cost of paying to have your winter/summer rims changed.
Development:
Demonstrate the entire process, step by step of how to check tire pressure, remove and replace a tire and ensure the spare is at the correct psi.
Practice:
Walk the students through the process, beginning with inspecting the tire, having them position the jack, loosen and tighten the lug nuts, position the spare tire, check the tire/door jam for the correct psi, checking the tire pressure.
Accommodations:
Have a compressor and air tools available for people who cannot physically tighten the lug nuts. Have an instructional video available as well as an audio guide for those with visual impairment. Go over alternative solutions to a flat tire such as CAA assistance.
Checking For Understanding:
In a team of 4 people, have them demonstrate the entire process, having one inspect the tire, determine correct psi, and measure tire pressure on spare. The other one will be responsible for Jack positioning and lifting/lowering the vehicle. The others will be responsible for loosening and tightening the lug nuts, as well as removing and replacing the tire in the correct position.
Closure:
Do a recap of the basic steps and any additional troubleshooting tips in case any additional issues arise such as going over lock nuts and what to do when the lug-nuts won't loosen.
