Lesson Plan : Teaching the Concept of Coordinate
Teacher Name: | M.Shameem Warsallee |
Grade: | Grade 6 |
Subject: | Math |
Topic: | Coordinates |
Content: | x-axis, y-axis, points, cartesian plane |
Goals: | 1. Explain the meaning of axes in a cartesian plane. 2. Plot and read coordinate points on a graph. 3. Join the points on the graph to draw a figure. |
Objectives: | Pupils should be able to locate things in space, appreciate the fact that coordinates have an important application in real life such as latitudes and longitudes |
Materials: | Snakes & Ladders boards, A5 size white papers, black colored markers, 2 long benches (or 4 desks for each line), grid papers, 2 dice of different colors |
Introduction: | 1. Teacher discusses the term 'coordinates' with the children. What can they remember? 2. Teacher reminds the children that with coordinates, you always move across first and then up. 3. Teacher explains to the class that a good way to remember the across and up sequence is to think of going along the corridor and up the stairs. Can the class think of any other phrases to help them remember? |
Development: | Pupils are directed to sit in neat rows and columns (one per desk). Teacher explains the notion of rows and columns to them. He stands in front of the classroom and points out to pupils that the starting point is at the left hand side of the classroom. |
Practice: | 1.Teacher asks one pupil to stand in front of the class and say who is sitting, e.g. a) At column 2 and row 3 b) At column 1 and row 4 c) At column 5 and row 5 2. After some practice, teacher explains to them that the same position can be simply identified as an ordered pair as follows: a) Column 2 and row 3 → (2,3) b) Column 1 and row 4 → ( 1,4) c) Column 5 and row 5 → (5,5) |
Accommodations: | No particular special accomodation except for seating for the purpose of the activity |
Checking For Understanding: | Activity 1: Teacher allows the children to work in groups of 6 and solve a puzzle. Each position corresponds to a letter. a) Write the correct word for each position |
Closure: | Using the Snake & Ladder boards with axes X and Y drawn on it, pupils play and try to read their positions on the grid. They throw two dice of different colors and write down the coordinates where the dice fall, e.g. Dice 1 → (7,9) Dice 2 → (6,4) |
Evaluation: | Pupils are evaluated as per the grid papers given to them. Pupils are given grid papers and they draw the Cartesian plane and plot some points. Plot the points K (2,2) L (8,2) M (10,5) and N (4,5). Draw the figure KLMN. Name the shape thus formed. |
