The student will be able to read the 4 different notes required to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" from the sheet music. The student will be able to play the 4 different notes on the flute. The student will know how many beats are in quarter, half and while notes in standard 4/4 time.
Materials:
A flute, sheet music and stand for each student.
Introduction:
Icebreaker: try to make any noise on the flute. Write the 4 notes on the board along with their name(letter). Teach students the fingering of the 4 notes on the flute and have them play them.
Development:
Explain 4/4 time and how many beats quarter, half and whole notes have. Have students play the 4 notes as quarter, half and whole notes. I will demonstrate once how "Mary Had a Little Lamb" should sound on the flute.
Practice:
Students play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" as a group with me calling the letter names out loud. As they get more comfortable playing, simply count time for them.
Accommodations:
For students struggling to play the flute, have them mimic the fingering on the flute while singing the notes.
Checking For Understanding:
Students play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" individually for me, and I will give them feedback to their performance.
