 How to Create a Character What Races and Classes you can choose. What an Ability score is and how to determine it. How ability scores affect what your character can do
Goals:
 You will be able to create a character, and begin playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons.
Objectives:
 Create a Character by rolling die to determine your character's abilities, as well as come up with a background story and starting equipment. - Want to see if students can comprehend character building; see if they understand what each ability does and how it affects their actions Learn what ability scores are and how they can affect your characters class and actions they can perform during the game. - Want to see if students understand how low and high points affect ability (e.g. low strength means you can't fight well, high intelligence means you know a lot of information)
Materials:
 Required: Paper (recommended Character Sheet), Pencil, Imagination Recommended: Player's Handbook, set of dice (d20, d12,two d10, d8, d6, d4)
Introduction:
 Describe to students what the different races and classes of character you can choose from, with illustrations from the Player's Handbook
Development:
 Describe to students the process of character creation: 1. Pick a Race 2. Pick a Class 3. Determine ability scores and modifiers 4. Come up with background for character
Practice:
 Create a sample character together with class to illustrate character building process
Accommodations:
 Different methods of determining Character abilities: standard score, point buy, roll 4d6 drop the lowest and add, etc.
Checking For Understanding:
 Review character sheets to see that students are following character creation rules, i.e. no weird races/classes, or very high ability scores (can't have one go over 20)
Closure:
 Ask students if there was difficult terms to understand, or if there was a character they wanted to create, but couldn't.
Evaluation:
 Review Character sheets to see if the rules were understood, or if ability scores were not calculated correctly. Provide recommended fixes for rule breaks
