Lesson Plan : Shapes and Angles

Teacher Name:
 Ashley Haseman
Grade:
 Grade 4
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
Identifying and drawing different angles and shapes with the appropriate tools.
Content:
Right angles, acute angles, obtuse angles, and straight angles, perpendicular lines, and parallel lines.
Goals:

Objectives:
To be able to visually and physically identify angle, using the appropriate tool if needed. Learn what shapes have which angles and be able to draw them. Also be able to draw parallel, oblique, and perpendicular lines.
Materials:
 -Protractor -Compass
Introduction:
Tell the students about the topic and use brief pictures to help them relate what we would be learning about that day to different things seen on a daily basis.
Development:
I would like to use a power point that had examples of the angles, words with definitions and the shapes; but also have photos actual physical objects that represent it and help the students connect it to their schema. I would also show them how to use the protractor and compass to determine which angle it is.
Practice:
I would draw different angles on the board and have them go through them with me, so I can see that they have a basic understanding of it. I would also use the same idea to help them understand what angles are in different shapes. I would also use cut-outs of of shapes and angles and have them hold up what goes with the angle I mention.I would have them stand up and make the parallel, oblique, and perpendicular lines with their arms or legs and a partners arms or legs.
Accommodations:
If I had students who were not understanding it, I would change having them work by themselves and make it more of a group packet. I would have them work with a partner and see if they could help each other out. If they couldn't after that, then i would have them ask me whatever questions they have.
Checking For Understanding:
In order to check their understanding of it, I would have them write in journals to help me understand how they feel about all of it and what is difficult for them. I would do it this way so that they do not feel dumb compared to other students and what they might think about the subject.
Closure:
For the closure part, I would have each student say one thing that they liked about the lesson or one thing that they are excited to understand bout the lesson that they never knew.
