Teacher Name: | Andrea Mills |
Grade: | Grade 7-8 |
Subject: | Math |
Topic: | |
Content: | Mean, Median, and Mode |
Goals: | The aim of this lesson plan is for students to count how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, record the data, and calculate the mean, median, and mode of that data. |
Objectives: | The students will be able to calculate the mean, median, and mode of data they will collect in an experiment. |
Materials: | Tootsie Pops, pencil, and paper. |
Introduction: | Instruct the students that they will be seeing how many licks it takes for them to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. |
Development: | They must record the number of licks by tallying them. After they have recorded the data, instruct the students to write their final number of licks on the whiteboard. Remember, there should be no candy shell remaining on the Tootsie Roll center in order for the data to be accurate! |
Practice: | Observe the students progress. Make sure they stay on task. |
Accommodations: | If there are students who are unable to record their own data, encourage them to partner up with another student |
Checking For Understanding: | |
Closure: | After all of the final numbers are written on the whiteboard, walk the students through calculating the Mean, Median, and Mode of all of the data collected throughout the activity. |
Evaluation: | |
Teacher Reflections: | Was this a fun activity for the students? Did they stay on task? Did they prefer to work with partners or alone? What could have been improved on in this activity? |
