Lesson Plan : Tootsie Pop Activity
Teacher Name: | Andrea Mills |
Grade: | Grade 7-8 |
Subject: | Math |
Topic: | |
Content: | Mean, Median, and Mode |
Goals: | Find the mean, median, and mode of how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop! |
Objectives: | The students will be able to learn about mean, median, and mode by recording their own data on how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, then comparing it with the rest of the class. |
Materials: | Tootsie Pops, and items to record data (pencil and paper). |
Introduction: | Give each student a Tootsie Pop and ensure they have a pencil and paper. |
Development: | Explain that the students will lick their Tootsie Pop until there is no candy shell on the Tootsie Roll center, recording each lick on the way to the center. Tallying or partnering up is acceptable. Once each student has their final number of licks recorded, instruct them to come write their number on the whiteboard. |
Practice: | Observe and make sure students are on task. |
Accommodations: | For students who need assistance with recording data, partnering up is a great way to help them participate in this activity! |
Checking For Understanding: | |
Closure: | After the students have recorded their data and written it on the whiteboard, together as a class, help the students find the mean, median, and mode of the data! |
Evaluation: | |
Teacher Reflections: | Did the students have fun? Were they on task? Did students prefer to partner up or did they prefer to work alone? What could have been improved on in this activity? |
