Lesson Plan : Fraction Match

Teacher Name:
 Ms. Fallon
Grade:
 Grade 3
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
Reducing fractions and matching them with the original fraction.
Content:
 - reduced terms - numerator and denominator - shaded region for help
Goals:
Each student should be able to recognize the reduced fraction and the shaded area that matches. Matching the two cards together and explaining how they got the answer.
Objectives:
-Define simplifying a fraction, lowest terms, greatest common factor. -Determine the common factors of the numerator and denominator of a given fraction. -Simplify a fraction by dividing its numerator and its denominator by a common factor. -Determine the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator of a given fraction. -Simplify a fraction by dividing its numerator and its denominator by their greatest common factor. -Recognize that a fraction is in lowest terms when the greatest common factor of its numerator and denominator is one. -Describe the procedure for simplifying fractions. -Small group interaction.
Materials:
24 small paper squares per group.
Introduction:
Mention we are doing a small group activity. Connect the lesson with the activity.
Development:
-Grab the pieces and explain what is written on each card. -Review any terms and answer questions. -Talk about different examples and match a few together to show a visual. -Explain how I got the answer. - Put into small groups and have the students begin.
Practice:
Walk around the classroom going to each group and seeing the progress they are making. Answer any questions. Talk to the groups about where they might see different fractions (pizza, cupcakes, etc.).
Accommodations:
Allowing extra time for students who have these accommodations. Motivation is needed for all students.
Checking For Understanding:
Have each small group discuss their answers in front of the classroom possibly give them a reward. Discuss why I had them do this and what the importance was.
Closure:
Good job students! Keep up the good work. Motivate them by mentioning practice makes perfect. Discuss how this connects to the everyday world. Answer any questions and then introduce the next topic/subject.
Evaluation:
Present a quiz later in the week that has a fraction that needs to be reduced to simplest terms. This quiz will be 5 questions, multiple choice.
