Lesson Plan : Math: Fractions

Teacher Name:
 Nakul Goyal
Grade:
 Grade 5
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
 Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Content:
 Addition, subtraction, fractions, numerator, denominator.
Goals:
Students should be able to add and subtract fractions.
Objectives:
Students will start adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Students should begin to understand the practical use of fractions. Students will be able to complete 20 problems with 80% accuracy.
Materials:
 Papers, pencils, manipulatives.
Introduction:
I will explain simple fractions (1/4, 2/4, 3/4) using pie-shaped manipulatives. After the students have relayed to me that they are forming an understanding of the concept, I will ask them about how they use fractions in everyday life (pizza, cooking, measuring, etc.).
Development:
I will demonstrate the steps required to successfully add and subtract fractions. I will do this for 2 (one of each: addition and subtraction) example problems.
Practice:
I will do a few more problems on the board but I will ask students for answer as we move step-by-step. The students will take notes using pencils and paper.
Accommodations:
The students who are experiencing difficulties will work with me, in a small group, using manipulatives more extensively. This will be done while the rest of the class is working on their worksheets.
Checking For Understanding:
The students will be given 10-15 home work problems.
Closure:
After the end of the lesson, the students will be asked to write a short reflection (3-5 sentences) on today's experience with fraction. What did they find easy? What did they find difficult? When, in real life, will they use fractions? This will be followed by a short (5-10 minute) discussion based on the reflections.
Evaluation:
I will read the reflections they have written as well as grade their home work problems.
