Goals:
 Indiana Standard EL.4.1.2 2006 Apply knowledge of synonyms (words with the same meaning), antonyms (words with opposite meanings), homographs (words that are spelled the same but have different meanings), and idioms (expressions that cannot be understood just by knowing the meanings of the words in the expression, such as couch potato) to determine the meaning of words and phrases.
Objectives:
 The students will expand their vocabulary and increase the richness of their writing through the use of synonyms.
Materials:
 Previously composed writing sample Highlighters Thesaurus
Introduction:
 1. Students will be introduced to the thesaurus and its usefulness for the revision of writing. 2. Students will hear examples of word replacement: instead of Joseph
Development:
 Using projection, students will view a short story
Practice:
 1. Students will work in groups of 3-4 and read through the remainder of the short story. 2. They will determine which words might be considered to be weak and highlight them. 3. The students will search a thesaurus to find appropriate word replacements.
