 Discuss how action by people from long ago and recent past have made a difference in other people's lives.
Goals:
  Help students understand the importance of individualism, individual action and character.
Objectives:
  Read and listen to stories about Cesar Chavez, co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association, who fought for better working environment and rights of migrant farm workers; explain how the actions of one person can make a difference.
Materials:
 "One Seed" song and lyrics; Cesar Chavez picture; Cesar Chavez Facts worksheet; Map of California; Key vocabulary worksheet; Timeline worksheet
Introduction:
 Listen to song, One Seed, by Rosemary Phillips followed by group discussion about its meaning.
Development:
 Students will apply meaning of "One Seed" song to real-life character, Cesar Chavez, whose picture will be displayed.
Practice:
 Students will be given a worksheet outlining facts about Cesar Chavez.
Accommodations:
 Upon completion of previous assignment, they will be asked to share their work with the class and tape their sentences to the picture of Cesar Chavez.
Checking For Understanding:
 Students will be given a short quiz on Cesar Chavez to test for information retention based on class discussion.
Closure:
 Students will be asked to create a timeline on the life of Cesar Chavez as homework. They will be able to use information discussed in class, Chavez facts worksheet, as well as private research.
Evaluation:
 They will be graded on classroom participation, effort shown in working with partners, and homework completion.
