Content: | Using the Bodily/Kinesthetic from the Eight Intelligences, role playing chapters of each book and pulling out name calling and seeing if they are different or the same. |
Goals: | Students need to understand the feeling and have empathy for those being called names. Students will be able to understand what it is like in someone elses shoes. |
Objectives: | Each student will identify 2 actions that are considered name calling. |
Materials: | Visual aids that may be a target for name calling. Glasses, a cane, a back brace, hand me down clothing, braces, an afro wig, a native american wig. |
Introduction: | The purpose of a no name calling activity is to get all of the students to respect others, show kindness and courtesy and to have respect for the school and their home. |
Development: | Sharing stories of bullying and name calling and explain how hurtful it can be. Explain that this is just an exercise and to not be hurt or offended but if they are, please speak up. |
Practice: | Two to four students selected at a time, they go to the front of the class, two select a prop and the other two make comments. Then the two that had the props sit down and the two that made the comments put on props and two new students make comments until the entire class has had props on. The comments are written down and later discussed. |
Accommodations: | Make allowances for those that are uncomfortable with the assignment. |
Checking For Understanding: | Random calling on students to explain why someone thinks it is funny to call names and why they should do something to stop it if they hear it. |
Closure: | Students will write and share a paragraph of how they can help reduce name calling. |
Evaluation: | Class participation is the key to an 'A' |
