Teacher Name:

 Grade 5
 Social Studies

This lesson plan introduces kids to vocabulary terms associated with eastern trade and Marco Polo's journeys to China.
Students will learn important vocabulary and terminology through study of eastern exploration and the journeys of Marco Polo.
Kids will address the history content standard. Students will use materials drawn from the diversity of human experience to analyze and interpret significant events, patterns and themes in the history of Ohio, the United States and the world. Kids will address benchmark B in which they describe the cultural patters that are evident in North America today as a result of exploration, colonization and conflict. Kids will also address fifth grade indicators S3 and S4. These indicators encompass settlement and deal with explaining why Europeans countries explored and colonized North America and describing the lasting effects of Spanish, French and English colonization.
Kids will obtain increased vocabulary awareness and knowledge by studying the silk road and trade with the east and African trading kingdoms by listening to and reading excerpts from student books and participating in a whole class vocabulary matching game.
Exert from student book on the silk road(teacher read passage) Expert from student book to be read by students Vocabulary matching card game Eastern trade worksheet
I will introduce this lesson by reading an excerpt from the student book and discussing trade with the class.
I will further development of student understanding by having each student read aloud one paragraph per student about the travels of Marco Polo. I will stop at each vocabulary word for class discussion.
I will distribute vocabulary term cards to half the class and will distribute vocabulary definition cards to the remaining students. Students will use prior knowledge gained from whole class reading to match their vocabulary cards to those with the definition on them.
If students are having problems matching vocabulary to definition I will give hints and will refer students to corresponding sections in the whole class passage.
Checking For Understanding:
I will check for understanding by discussing vocabulary card matches with the class. I will distribute a eastern exploration worksheet to the class and we will complete it as a class.
I will go over answers for the exploration worksheet and will have the kids put the worksheet in their social studies folder for end of unit review.
I will assess student understanding by assessing ease of matching vocabulary terms during the whole class vocabulary game and will monitor student answers during whole class completion of exploration worksheet.
