Goals:
 Students will be able to determine how location plays a key role in where people settle. Students will ascertain the differing reasons that we have had waves of immigrants into our country by starting with the latest wave of immigrants, the Mexicans.
Objectives:
 -Students will complete a US map showing the current trends in Mexican immigration -Students will be able to list the following reasons for for this immigration wave: economic; better education for their children; healthcare
Materials:
 textbooks; US outline maps; US census bureau data; projector with PowerPoint from internet
Introduction:
 Group Activity: Have students in groups of 4 answer the following question: Why do people immigrate to America? Have groups present their findings on the Elmo
Development:
 Using the projector display the information from this website: http://www.loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/presentationsandactivities/presentations/immigration/mexican9.html Have students get out their Atlas and look at the population trend as shown.
Practice:
 Have students color the map to reflect states that have a high Mexican immigrant population. Students also need to discuss in their groups what impract they think this is going to have on our country.
Accommodations:
 In groups students will choose between writing, drawing, or researching the assigned area.
Checking For Understanding:
 Teacher circulates; monitoring student progress; giving positive feedback and redirecting as needed
Closure:
 (Project will be due on Friday for the final assessment) Today we have started our unit on how different groups of people settled into different regions. Tomorrow we will look at another group and compare why the relocated, where they relocated and how they arrived in America as well as their impact on our culture.
