Lesson Plan : Google Earth Math Area and Volume

Teacher Name:
 Mr. Shmski
Grade:
 Grade 7-8
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
 Area and Volume, proportion/rate
Content:
Area, Volume, sphere, cylinder, triangular prism
Goals:
Students will be able to use authentic learning or real life situation math problems using area and volume. Students will use a new tech tool Google earth to accomplish this. Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Math Grade 8 2.3.8 A. Develop formulas and procedures for determining measurements (e.g., area, volume, distance). B. Solve rate problems (e.g., rate time = distance, principal interest rate = interest). C. Measure angles in degrees and determine the relationships of angles. D. Estimate, use, and describe measures of distance, rate, perimeter, area, volume, weight, mass, and angles. E. Describe how a change in linear dimension of an object affects its perimeter, area, and volume. F. Use scale measurements to interpret maps or drawings. G. Create and use scale models.
Objectives:
Students will use ruler tool on Google earth to measure and find area and volume of real buildings such as their school, the Tower of Pisa, the pyramids of Giza and famous architectural buildings around the world. studentw will use google search to find area and volume formulas for a sphere, cylinder, triangular prism. Students will calculate using the laptop calculator and the Google Earth measurements. Students will find a building, a roof top, a farm field, etc.and create an authentic problem of their own on Google Earth.
Materials:
 Laptop with Google earth.
Introduction:
The event will center on Google Earth on the Interactive Promethean/ Smartboard.
Development:
Students will be given 5 minutes to play with Google Earth. The teacher will model how to use the ruler tool, as a line tool or path tool for measurement. All students will mimic the teacher measuring a school roof and finding the area.
Practice:
Students will practice on a neighboring school's roof and teacher will facilitate any problems or difficulties that arise.
Accommodations:
Using laptops students will work in groups assigned by the teacher. Group leaders are responsible for the answers before they are handed in. The group may work together or split up and get the work done faster depending on the group leadership.
Checking For Understanding:
Students need to write down their formulas and steps to each area and volume problem. Students are graded on their work and their answer. Students will enter their answers into a google doc form. Students will present their findings by presenting how they did the problem using the interactive white board.
Closure:
Closure will be done through discussion or a 21 classes blog to see how they felt about this kind of assignment.
Evaluation:
Students will get a two complex problems to solve on google earth, one on area and one on volume. The work worth half and the correct answers worth half or 50%.
