Content: | This lesson is designed for 8th grade students to get an impression of what they might find out about the decade they will be researching through the study of visual images of the time period. Each decade group will receive a sheet of pictures from their decade covering the subject areas they will be researching about their decade: History and politics Arts and entertainment Daily life Science and technology Miscellaneous (we use this for things that just don�t fit in the other 4 areas) |
Goals: | Students will develop skills in visualization to learn how images convey stories about people places and times. |
Objectives: | Students will complete 5 worksheets about their pictures. Students will present their 'findings' to the class. Students will create a list of questions they desire to answer during their research. |
Materials: | Practice pictures for introduction Photo Analysis Worksheets Decade Picture Sheets LCD Projector and computer to introduce activities |

Development: | 1. What do you see in the picture that tells you about the person(s), places, or things and their possible importance to your decade? Look at clothes, hairstyle, features, setting, etc. 2. What might the picture have been taken? Might there be a message, a particular reason? 3. If you were there what would you want to ask of the people in the picture or if not people maybe the photographer? 4. Some photographers enhance their work using elements of lighting color, shading , angles etc. Are these elements used? How do the effect how you look at the picture? 5. Are you right or wrong? There are no wrong answers. |
Practice: | To prepare them for the activity the teacher will give students some guidelines to consider when reading pictures. A practice session with pictures from the 1990s, a decade not covered, will give the class an opportunity to try out their skills in interpreting what they see. |
Accommodations: | Teachers and aides will assist our special ed students when needed with guding questions. |
