Lesson Plan : Developing a Character

Teacher Name:
 Heather Nelson
Grade:
 Grade 6
Subject:
 Language Arts

Topic:
 Making inferences
Content:

Goals:
Students will learn that they need to make inferences when they read about a character based on little pieces of information.
Objectives:
By using materials given, students will develop a narrative describing their theory of a character. Students will learn to make inferences about a person based on the objects.
Materials:
coupon, Suitcase, Messenger Bag, Briefcase, Tote bag, Gym bag, purse filled with miscellaneous items (cosmetics, newspapers, magazines, airline tickets, photographs, music, grooming materials, keys, etc.)
Introduction:
The students would write in their journals what they already know about making observations and inferences.
Development:
The teacher would then review their previous knowledge, and add to make a class definition of each.
Practice:
The teacher would then have the students look at a coupon found at their desk. The teacher would have a two column chart draw on the board with observations written on one side and inferences written on the other side. The class would then generate a list of observation on the coupon. (ex. experation date, what it is for, the store, etc.) Then the teacher would ask the students to make some inferences based on the observations. (ex. The person likes to eat pizza, they shop at Whole Foods, they do not clean out their purse because the coupon has expired, etc.)
Accommodations:
The students will be placed in mixed ability groups and each will be able to contribute input throughout the activity. Some will be better at observations and details while others will be stretched to come up with inferences based on the detailed observations.
Checking For Understanding:
The students will create a group list and then write an individual description of the person they believe the bag belongs to. (age, gender, occupation, etc.)
Closure:
Each group will share one item and the inferences they made from that item. They will also then read one description of who they think their person was.
