Content: | This lesson introduces students to the key properties and features of the planets in our solar system, starting with Mercury and working outward. |
Goals: | The students will be able to identify the nine planets and all their features and characteristics. The students will be able to understand the interaction and organization in the solar system and the universe and how it affects life on Earth. |
Objectives: | Given an outline of the solar system, the students will identify the planets in the solar system and list 3 features for each. Given a worksheet, the students will distinguish between the inner and outer planets and their relative distance from the sun. Given a test, the students will write two characteristics that allow Earth to sustain life. |
Materials: | Overhead projector,transparencies, textbook, pencil, paper, markers and construction paper |
Introduction: | The strategies that have been chosen is the KWL strategy which provides a structure thst helps students focus on what they should be learning as they read the textbook, it builds background knowledge. SQ3R is for reading content, ongoing assessements and reciprocal teaching, which involves summarizing the text, concept mapping, asking questions and answering them, clarifying any difficult areas by re-reading or reteaching and setting purpose for reading and learning this specific area. The rationale for choosing these startegies was to attempt to meet the individual needs for students who have a wide range of abilities and learning exceptionalities. Also to be effective, meet the goals of the curriculum and students master the content area of the solar system sucessfully. Procedure: As students enter the classroom an envelope will be handed to them with all the nine planets cut into pieces of construction paper and they will have five minutes to list the planets in order from their distance to the sun. This will activate prior knowledge of the solar system.The teacher will then do a pre-reading concept map. Once this activty is completed,the teacher will then give students a KWL worsksheet to start working on. Next,the teacher will read a section in the book as students follow along in their texts. The teacher will then lecture and gives notes. Students will then refer to their KWL chart and fill in what they have learned so far. They will also write down any questions they may have. The students will also complete definitions for the keys terms; planet, solar system, hydroshere, gas giant, satellite and moon. Following this assignment,students will re-read this section in a group of no more than four students on the inner and outer planets, and then organize what they have learned in a chart for both. One heading should be similarities and the other should be differences. Students will fill in their charts by describing each planet's simillarities and differences to the other inner planet and then to the other outer planets using information form the text. |
Development: | The students will be required to draw a post-reading concept map by using the main topics of the inner and outer planets of the solar system and then write three propositions from the concept map. |
Practice: | The teacher will ask students various questions about the planets in the solar system. Also have students develop a phrase that will help them remember the order of the planets. *Note* Each word should start with the first letter of the planet. |
Accommodations: | Inclusion Strategies: -English Language Learners -ESE Studnets will be have the option of choosing a planet and writing an imaginary story on thie dream vacation away from earth. Students will need to include details describing how far the planet is from the sun , list moon (if any), order of the planet from the sun, how long a year is in the planet. how long does a day last on plant and general information about teh atmposphere of the planet. They may use the text, internet searchers for detail and reference books. An ESOL and ESE specialist will be around for assistance. |
Checking For Understanding: | In evaluating these there are many assessments resources to monitor students's progress will be administered, such as skills worksheets, quizzes, chapter test, labs& activities to ensure frequent reinforcements to increase retention and building on an overall understanding of the subject matter. |
Closure: | Before the students leave the class they will have to name at least one planet and feature of that planet. |
Evaluation: | The test, quizzes and group work will serve as a evaluation of the students comprehension of the lesson. |
