Content:
 California Content Standards: ELA 1 R1.3A B, HSS 12.13.1, Health 12.8- Recognizes survival signs. ELA 17 2.1A, HSS 13.2- Comprehends environmental signs in the community. Vocabulary (week of 12/15/09: 1. Escalator 2. Exit 3.In/Out 4. In Case of Fire... 5. Call 911 6. Bus Stop 7. Don't Walk 8. Do Not Enter 9. No Walking 10. No Trespassing
Goals:
 The students will be able to identify indoor and outdoor survival signs with 80% accuracy. Students will be able to identify the shape of the signs with 90% accuracy. Students will be able to answer questions with 80% accuracy.
Objectives:
 Students will learn survival signs that are common while in the community. Students will discuss the importance of these signs to ensure their own safety.
Materials:
 Outdoor/Indoor Survival Sign realia by PCI Education. Outdoor/Indoor Survival Sign bingo game by PCI Education. Edmark Survival Sign Worksheets.
Introduction:
 Teacher will conduct a whole group instruction to review 10 safety signs per week. Discuss with the class: where the signs will be found, what the signs mean, why the sign is important, and individual characteristics (ie. shape, color)of each sign.
Development:
 Break students into groups of two and provide each group with two signs (front and back have different signs) to discuss their placards. After approximately 10 minutes have each student present one sign.
Practice:
 Have one student pass out a Survival Bingo card to everyone and one student pass out 15 bingo chips per student. Staff member will call out signs and match signs to their own cards. Other staff member will have students discuss what each sign called means.
Accommodations:
 With pair shares divide students with contrasting academic/verbal abilities. Have parapro. or TA sit with students who need assistance for bingo game. Use highlighter for students with difficulty reading/writing. Have students draw lines to correct answer or cut and paste if needed.
Checking For Understanding:
 While on community outings have students identify signs that are found during CBI. Weekly review and student work samples (Edmark).
Closure:
 Hand out prizes for students who get bingo. Review the 5 signs from that week after the bingo game.
