Lesson Plan : Theoretical Probability

Teacher Name:
 Jill Bongiolatti
Grade:
 Grade 9-10
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
 Theoretical Probability
Content:
Key Vocabulary: probability outcome sample space event theoretical probability formula for theoretical prob. complement of an event
Goals:
Students will have a firm understanding of theoretical probability in preparation for performing experiments when they learn about experimental probability.
Objectives:
Students will be able to find theoretical probability in a variety of situations, and use this knowledge to make conjectures based on what they know.
Materials:
 SMART Board Lesson (notes)
Introduction:
Show number cube - ask "When I roll this cube, what are all of the possibilities that will be showing" "How many possibilities are there?"
Development:
Provide detailed notes with key vocabulary terms explained and discussed.
Practice:
Discuss favorable outcome for rolling an even number Bowl with 12 slips of paper (months) p(name of the month starts with J).
Accommodations:
n/a will offer students a number cube if they need one - shouldn't be necessary - will demonstrate the "experiment" that theoretical probability is based on if it appears that there is a difficulty understanding.
Checking For Understanding:
 Display Spinner on board, ask: p(purple) p(green) p(5) p(even) p(purple or white) p(8) p(greater than 4) p(even or odd) p(1 or 6) p(not white) p(not 2) p(not purple) p(not 8)
Closure:
exit slip "Suppose I choose a person at random from the people in the class today. What is the probability that I choose you?" "What is the probability that I choose a boy"
Evaluation:
The first method of evaluation that I will use is observation and feedback from discussion in class. This will determine the pace of class. Next I will use my "Check for Understanding" assessment that we will do as a group on the board - again, watching for feedback from students. Then I will use my closure (exit slip) activity to determine if they have the knowledge to go forward with experimental probability the following day. Finally, their homework assignment will be a worksheet from the book and a sheet where they will begin to discover experimental probability on their own.
