Content:
 Number, Number Sense and Operations Prior lesson: Apply Problem Solving Techniques with Step Step Problems. Recognizing Word Problem Patterns Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division and Pattern.
Goals:
 Student will be able to identify a pattern that indicates what operation to use. Students will use prior knowledge of the 5 Step Plan, when answering the word problem or mysteries.
Objectives:
 1.Given 4 questions using code words with single-step problems students will answer at least 3 out of the 4 correctly. 2.Given 6 problems involving finding word-problem patterns with multiplication and division students will correctly answer at least 4 out of 6 correctly. 3.Given a reading selection from Math Mystery, students will participate in a class reading and then collectively complete the investigator's log with a 100% participation and completion.

 Resource Book (How to Solve Word Problems) pg.5-7 pg 9-12 Resource Book 40 Fabulous Math Mysteries Kids Can't Resist. pg
Introduction:
 Problem of the Day Tuesday 9-23-09 Recall Students Memory by asking them to explain the Five-Step Plan. Problem of the Day Wednesday 9-24-09 Give one example of a pattern for each of the following: Addition Patter, Subtraction Pattern, Multiplication Pattern, and Division Pattern.
Development:
 Read over in detail page 9 (How to Solve Word Problems) Read Meet The Detectives pg. -10 (40 Fabulous Math Mysteries Kids Can't Resist) Use the Teaching Notes pg 85 to discuss expectations for the reading activity.
Practice:
 As a class complete questions 1-5 pg 10 (Allow time for students to work through the problems and answer them correctly before moving on to the next problem.) Read The Cd Collection Crisis pg 12-13(40 Fabulous Math Mysteries Kids Can't Resist) Use the Teaching Tips on page 86. Guide student through the Investigator's Log.
Accommodations:
 All material will be read to the students and clarification will be made along the way. Students will be given extra wait time between questions. Students will be aloud to use reference sheets when answering independent practice. Calculators for basic facts.
Checking For Understanding:
 POD question on Wednesday. Teacher observation as she walks around the room during guided practice. Reflection Questions about the Mystery Reading Activity.
Closure:
 Discussion on pulling problem solving skills together.
