Materials:
pencil, paper, colored pencils, markers, or crayons
Introduction:
The teacher begins by showing students a website with number stories.(http://www.mathcats.com/explore/numberstories.html)The website is filled with illustrated math number stories submitted by students around the world. Together, teacher and students will read and discuss each picture.
Development:
After discussing four or five stories, ask students to share what a number story is. Students should identify that each number story contains two sets of objects--balloons, cookies--and that something happens to the items in those two sets;they are added or subtracted from each other.
Practice:
Have each student write an equation, such as 3+4=7 on his or her paper. Brainstorm with the students ideas for stories that can include their equations. If the equation is 3+4=7,the story might be, "Maria had 3 chocolate chip cookies. She bought 4 oatmeal cookies from Mr. Johnson. She now has 7 cookies."
Accommodations:
Students may choose to write and illustrate the story on the computer. Students may write more than one story. The story may be simple or complex, depending upon the level of the student. Students will earn "dollars" for completing task, for working appropriately with partner/group, for following classroom norms.
Checking For Understanding:
Students will be evaluated on their: -ability to describe a math problem using words in a number story. -ability to write the story. -ability to illustrate that math problem.
Closure:
Students will share his/her work with the class. The teacher will make colored copies of the stories to put in a classroom book for each student.
Evaluation:
Students will answer 8 math number stories for homework.
