Lesson Plan : Walking with Dinosaurs

Teacher Name:
 Maureen McNeil
Grade:
 Grade 4
Subject:
 Science

Topic:
Students will research via the internet information on a specific dinosaur. They will then fill out a research web with their found information.
Content:
Students will align research with a Unit in their Science books.
Goals:
Students will create a research web using internet based documents on dinosaurs.
Objectives:
Given computer time, students will find information relating to a specific dinosaur of their choice, with no teacher assistance. Given internet based documents, students will complete a research web sheet on their specific dinosaur, with no teacher assistence. Given a research web sheet to complete, students will correctly fill in all necessary infomation asked, based on internet documents, with no teacher assistance.
Materials:

Introduction:
Tell students that along with our dinosaur unit that we have been studying, we will now use the internet and the BBC web site "walking with dinosaurs" to complete a research web. Students will have the choice of what dinosaur they want to use.
Development:
Given a research web sheet with a list of all facts and information pieces needed to complete the assignment, students will be given 30 minutes each for 3 days to find out as much information needed. After each day has been completed, students will share what they have found and the teacher will check to see if it is appropriate information. (The web site has already been checked and approved by the teacher). Students must use their time wisely and all pieces of information must be located and researched.
Practice:
Students will then, when research has finished, fill in the research web according to instructions. Students must also locate a picture of their chosen dinosaur to add to the web. (Students may print out a picture or draw one, it is their choice)
Accommodations:
To accommodate the student who is absent or who does not have the proper functions to use a computer, the teacher will provide background information to that student. To the student who is in special education, the teacher will work one-on-one with the student to make sure the assignment is completed.
Checking For Understanding:
To check for understanding, the teacher will ask students throughout their computer time, how they got to the web site, what route they took, where specific information may be located, etc. A mini computer quiz will be given prior to this lesson as well to assure complete computer knowledge in the classroom.
Closure:
This project is a week long project, to put closure to it at the end of the week, students will present their paragraphs to the class and hand in the assignment to the teacher. Since this lesson is within a science lesson, the teacher will continue on with the dinosaur lesson for another week or two.
Evaluation:
Evaluation will be based on proper research technique rather than the actual research web. The idea behind this lesson to make sure students have complete understanding of how research can be done through the computer, not just from a book.
Teacher Reflections:
I actually did this lesson with my fourth grade class and they loved it! They were so excited about using the computers each day. Some students even copied down the address and did more research at home. I think that this was a great way to incorporate technology with a science lesson. My students wanted to do this with other lessons as well. We ran out of time this school year, but I will incorporate more next year.
