Teacher Name:
 Cynthia Anselmo
Grade:
 Grade 4
Subject:
 Language Arts

Topic:
 Incorporating Literacy and Technology
Content:
Using the internet to gather information to create a classroom news cast.
Goals:
Students will gather information from the internet to create an oral news cast informing the rest of the class. Students will be able to turn an outline into a typed a final copy of the news story they find.
Objectives:
Given a sample outline and websites, the students will gather information to create a outline of the 5 Ws on a news story they want to report with 95% accuracy. Given a sample news report and website, the students will use their 5 W outline to write a paragraph with 95% accuracy.
Materials:
 5 W Outline Computer www.news12.com www.abcnews.com www.moviephone.com www.weather.com www.nbcnews.com www.espn.com Overhead Projector (for accomodations)
Introduction:
I will introduce the lesson by polling the students to see how many of them watch the news. I will ask them why we have news. Next, I will then ask what some things they talk about on the news are. I will write their answers on the board. It is expected they will say Weather, Sports, things going on around us and in the world, (Current Events). I will then tell them they are going to become news reporters. They are going to gather information, write a news report, and put on a news show for the rest of the class. I will also tell them that they will be using the computer and the internet to research for their news show.
Development:
I will divide the class into 4 or 5 groups of 5. I will then tell the students one member from each group will take a topic to report about. The topics will be a World Current Event, Local Current Event, Weather, Sports, and Entertainment, such as a new movie (PG or Less) that is coming out or they have seen. I will tell them in their reports they must include the 5 Ws which they have previously been taught - Who were the people involved, what the topic is and what happened (what's is the story they researched about) and why it occurred, When, the date, it occurred, and Where it is going on. I will also tell them that they are going to write up their news reports by making an outline and then writing there findings in a typed report form that will be handed in after they report their stories to the class. I will then model a news story that I have researched. I will say, "On Tuesday, March 7th, the Beeline Bus union strikers met to talk again with Liberty Lines Management. Recently, the Beeline Bus Company went on strike because they wanted better health benefits and a lower retirement age. No agreement was reached. The strike has left many Westchester people stranded and needing to find another way to get around. I will then take the story and create a visual outline for the students to see, showing them how I included each of the 5 Ws in my report. Who The Beeline Union workers and Liberty Lines Management. What Talks about ending the strike that is going on. People are being stranded. Why They are on strike because they want benefits and a lower retirement age. When March 6th and 7th. Where Westchester County. I will then tell the students the websites they can use to look up information. I will explain the direction that they will be looking up the information, writing their outline and then meeting back with their group to discuss what they are going to report on. I will then tell them once they are done with that, they may go back to the computer to type their paragraphs.
Practice:
The students will discuss in their groups and decide who is doing what. They will then go to the computers and going to the websites that pertain to their topic. I will be monitoring the students making sure they can get on the website. The students will then find a news story they would like to work on. They will fill in their 5 W outlines. I will be walking around, answering questions the students may have and helping them find a good topic. The students will then meet back in groups, discuss their story choices.
Accommodations:
For students who are unable to work independently, I will have them work with another student and do a news story together. Another accommodation I will make is to have a copy of the new report I did on an overhead as a visual for the students to see as they are doing their stories. Also, if a student lacks fine motor skills, I will give them a choice to work with another student or just give an oral presentation.
Checking For Understanding:
Through my monitoring, I can check to make sure the students are on the right track. I will ask questions, Why is the news important?, Why do we need to know what is going on around us and in the world? What have you learned from the other students reports? Why is it good to use an outline before creating a final copy? I will also design a rubric to check the students work against to make sure they have met the requirements
Closure:
To wrap up the lesson, I will have the students get back into their groups. I will give them 5 minutes to prepare themselves to see which order they want to present in. I will then have the students presents their mini news cast to the rest of the class until all the groups have gone. I will collect their outlines and typed reports, tell them what a terrific job they did. I will then give directions for what they will be doing next.
Evaluation:
Information relayed in the oral reports will let me know if the students have done what was asked of them. I will read over their outlines and reports. If they have followed all directions and met the requirements on the rubric, I will know they have understood the lesson and have mastered the goal.
Teacher Reflections:
 To be completed after lesson.
