Goals: | 1. Students will make a connection that common things eg. their day has a beginning, middle and ending. 2. Students will recognize and talk about a story as an ordered series of events. 3. Students will practice sequencing as a group and then practice it independently |

Materials: | -The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle -chart paper, markers -demonstration sequencing cards -worksheets -scissors, glue, crayons/pencil crayons -long strips of construction paper |
Introduction: | -tell students we are going to talk about the beginning, middle and end of a story -first we are going to talk about the beginning, middle and ending of their own day -use a graphic organizer on chart paper to write down their ideas |
Development: | -read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle -as you are reading reflect out loud, "I think this is the beginning", "This must be the middle" etc |
Practice: | -have the story sequencing cards laid out for the students to look at -call on students to come and pick the first card, the second etc. Why did they pick the card? -when it is in order talk about the beginning, middle and end of the story |
Accommodations: | -active discussion -manipulation of sequence cards -art activity (colour, cut paste) |
Checking For Understanding: | -observe for comprehension during discussion -independent sequencing work will reveal understanding |
