Goals:
 Activity 1: - Students will learn how to better describe meanings of words - Students will be more involved in the learning process Activity 2: - Students will practice reading and saying quickly what they've read - Students will practice listening and interpreting information
Objectives:
 Activity 1: - Students guessing the words will give timely responses - Students describing the words will give accurate descriptions - There will be little time when students aren not speaking or listening Activity 2: - Students will say clearly what they have read - Students will write accurately what they have heard
Materials:
 Activity 1: paper headband, printed words (nouns, verbs, and adjectives) on slips of paper Activity 2: Two printed paragraphs (with one copy of each) in basic English (each with no more than 100 words), transparent tape
Introduction:
 Activity 1: - Explain to students that they will be working in groups of 3-4 students - Explain the rules (students can describe each word without saying the word; students must use English ONLY); tell them the time limit is two minutes and that the teacher(s) will count the number of words guessed correctly in each group; explain that the winning group will receive a prize Activity 2: - Ask for two volunteer teams - Explain the rules (only one person from each team can run to the board to read the paragraph; only one person at the table may write and the writer must be the same person for the entire time limit of two to three minutes); explain that the winning team will win a prize
Development:
  Activity 1: Teacher puts the headband on his/her head and puts a sample word on the headband; Teacher tells students exmples of possible hints or clues for the word Activity 2: Teacher tapes the paragraphs on the blackboard; teacher demonstrates how to run to the board and read what is written and shows students how they should run back to their team's table and report what they have read within the time limit
Practice:
 Activity 1: Invite each table up one by one; administer the activity and provide the time limit reminder; keep score Activity 2: Choose two groups or ask for volunteers; administer the activity; if time allows, do another two group competition after the first one
