Lesson Plan : Ghost Canoe

Teacher Name:
 Mrs. Dotson
Grade:
 Grade 7-8
Subject:
 Language Arts

Topic:
 Vocabulary and visualization
Content:
Vocabulary enhancement and visualization strategy in reading
Goals:
Students will enhance their vocabulary skills. They will also work on their reading comprehension by working on visualization while we are reading the book Ghost Canoe.
Objectives:
Given the list of vocabulary words that are from the root of (JECT) we will discuss the 10 words and their definitions. We will give examples of each word of how the students would use the word in their everyday language. Class will write out the definitions to each word and use it in a sentence. We will then discuss visualization strategies and have the students break into groups of 2 and design a scene from the book. Give students 10 minutes to design and then have the entire class move in groups to correctly guess the scene constructed by each small group.
Materials:
Vocabulary words on a overhead projector sheet, definitions, Play-doh (clay)
Introduction:
Through questioning I will ask the students what they think the root word (ject) means by using their prior knowledge. Allow for answers and comments. After vocabulary we will focus on the visualization activity.
Development:
1)After discussing their answers as to what the root (Ject) is begin discussing each of the 10 words and give the definintions of each word. Ask various students an example of each word to build understanding. 2)Explain to the class the importance of visualizing while you are reading. This is an important and useful strategy. Give them a few verbal examples. Have students close their eyes and say the next few sentences. "The big yellow bus with many junior high students pulled into McDonalds." "The elephant at the zoo grabbed the peanut from the 3 year old boy."
Practice:
1)Students will write down the definitions to each word and then discuss. After discussion each student will write a sentence using the word. (allow 10 minutes, just enough time to make it around the class and look at each student's sentences. Have students finish with the next 9 words as homework. 2)Begin discussing visualization.
Accommodations:
1)Vocab-For students struggling help them understand the word and then verbally use the word in a sentence. Once they can verbally use the word in a sentence have he/she write it down. Watch for correct grammar and spelling. 2)Visualization activity-Help those students talk about a scene they remember in the book and describe it to me, then I will write it down and help direct them on how to form it out of play-doh
Checking For Understanding:
Listen to discussion on the words and their meanings. Check over every students sentences using the vocabulary words. View each groups scene created and have them discuss the scene.
Closure:
Review the need for visualization and have them practice on other class readings( visualizing as they read) Remind of the sentences as homework and repeat the words again.
Evaluation:
I will assess the students achievement by grading the sentences and determine if the student understands the meaning and usage. Within the visualization I will assess each student as they describe the scene's they created and also as they guess other groups scenes which will indicate that they are visualizing the reading.
