Content:
 Third Grade California Standards: English Language Arts 1.0: Students write clear and coherent sentences that develop a central idea. Their Writing shows they consider the audience and perpose. English Language Arts 1.3: Understand the structure and organization of various reference materials History and Social Science 3.2: Students describe the American Indian Nations in their local region long ago and in therecent past.
Goals:
 Students will gain a deeper understanding of Native american tribes described in our social studies books. We will form 4 collaborative groups of 5 students.
Objectives:
 Each group will become their own "Tribe" and do internet and library book research on themselves.Each group member will contribute to the collaborative effort by writing a piece of the following elements of their report: shelter, clothing, food, geography, customs (religious and social). Each group will orally present their final written projects to the class, and then construct a diorama to represent their research in three dimensional form.
Materials:
 Reports: Internet and library book research material, computers for word processing and internet research, pencils notebook paper, construction paper for cover of report. Materials for Diorama: Construction and drawing paper,crayons, markers, glue, tape, scissors, natural materials(twigs, leaves, dirt, rocks), shoe boxes for each group, twine, moedling clay or plaster of paris.
Introduction:
 Teacher will facillitate the process by providing guidance for the project guidelines and the grading rubric. Teacher will introduce the four tribes of study during a mini-lesson. Students will use their social studies books to read along with her.
Development:
 Teacher will explain the collaborative process and how each one of the group members will take a piece of the project do research on it and then write a summary of their research for the final report.
Practice:
 Teacher will do a guided writing exercise on summarizing non-fiction, and refresh the class on the writing process: 1. Pre-Write 2. Drafting 3. Revising (meet with Teacher) 4. Proofing (meet with Teacher) 5. Publish Teacher will review final writing pieces of each group and then assign a date and time for them to present their project orally.
Accommodations:
 Students who are ELL or differently abled can be paired with another student who is able to work independently.
Checking For Understanding:
 Students will be graded on based on a rubric and their ability to work as a group.
Closure:
 Students will show their dioramas as a class museum to their classmates and parents.
