Content:
 Choice of current event from the Newspaper or newsletter. Read as a class or read individually. Teacher may choose article, if needed. Assistant and Teacher should choose an article of their own. Vocabulary will come from article and will be written on the board and on notepaper.
Goals:
 Students will learn to make decisions in regard to interest: article should be interesting to them presentation practice discussion practice participation in group, share interest become familiar with newspaper as information source
Objectives:
 communication skills comprehension skills reading skills
Materials:
 newspapers, newsletters, magazines. overhead, if needed.
Introduction:
 Call to everyone's attention that current events is part of the social studies curriculum. Let the class know that newspapers show what is currently happening in the world, the state, and their own community.
Development:
 Show the class the different sources to be used; newspapers, magazines, and the newsletter. Allow them to choose the source they wish to read. Discuss various articles and allow plenty of time to choose articles. Students may choose their own article or ask for help with this process. Remind the students you are there to help.
Practice:
 Allow time for the students to look through the various sources. Circulate around the tables to help the students focus on topics in the papers and magazines.
Accommodations:
 Student may pick a reader Students who are able, may read for those who do not want to read Help dicipher vocabulary for those in need.
Checking For Understanding:
 Write vocabulary on the board Write main idea of article on the board Discuss the writing of a paper Ask questions that bring out the students' understanding of the article chosen.
Closure:
 vocabulary list will be formed article list will be recorded Remember to encourage and thank students for their presentations and participation.
