Objectives: | (B)analyze the effects of changing demographic patterns resulting from immigration to the United States. |
Materials: | Ellis Island video The poem "You Have to Live in Somebody Else's Country to Understand" Immigration worksheet |
Introduction: | Ellis Island introduction video. |
Development: | Read the poem "You Have to Live in Somebody Else's Country to Understand" in my native tongue. |
Practice: | Students will work on the worksheet on how they felt about hearing a language they did not understand. After the worksheet, the poem will be read out load but in English. |
Accommodations: | Instead of writing out their feelings on hearing a different language. Students who are bilingual can share about their language or students who just want to share their feelings can in groups. |
Checking For Understanding: | After the worksheet/group discussion, students can share their views on the poem and a class discussion will take place over what it feels like being a "outsider" personal experiences may be shared at this time. |
Closure: | Remind students of the difficulties it took for their ancestors to get here and to treat those who just arrived well. |
Evaluation: | The class discussion will give a good indication of what the students took from the class and what they learned about immigration. |
Teacher Reflections: | The teacher can reflect on the group and class discussions and read the family background to see where he can better the lesson. |
