 This lesson plan introduces kids to european explorers John Cabot, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Francis Drake and Christopher Colubus and the great european race for space.
Content:
 Students will be introduced to the concept of european exploration and its affects on the lands they colonized.
Goals:
 Kids will address the history content standard. Students will use materials drawn from the diversity of human experience to analyze and interpret significant events, patterns and themes in the history of Ohio,the United States and the world. Kids will address benchmark B in which they describe the cultural patters that are evident in North America today as a result of exploration, colonization and conflict. Kids will also address fifth grade indicators S3 and S4. These indicators encompass settlement and deal with explaining why europeans countries explored and colonized North America and describing the lasting effects of Spanish, French and English colonization in North America.
Objectives:
 Kids will gain an understanding of early explorers by learning about explorers John Cabor, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Francis Drake and Christopher Columbus. Students will gain knowledge of their effect on the development of the North American Continent by studying their exploration jouneys and the reasons for these explorations by watching a video on these early explorers.

Introduction:
 I will begin this lesson by preassessing students knowledge of exploration by having a brief class discussion on explorers and exploration voyages in general. I will distribute a bulleted list of explorer information to be used by students later in the lesson.
Development:
 I will further develop student knowledge of explorers by having students watch a brief 10 minute segment of a video on european explorers.
Practice:
 Students will then use the bulleted list handout and information from the video to complete the movie quiz worksheet distributed after completion of the video.
Accommodations:
 I will be circulating the room to answer questions during completion of the movie quiz worksheet. If students seem to be having difficulty I will allow them to answer the questions in groups.
Checking For Understanding:
 Once the discussion of the movie quiz worksheet has been completed I will pass out an explorers crossword puzzle. Students will complete it in groups.

Evaluation:
 I will assess the sucess of the lesson by going over the answers to the explorers crossword puzzle with the class.
