 This activity can be used to supplement a unit about fish. After learning about the characteristics of fish, students create a class Venn diagram comparing and contrasting humans and fish.
Goals:
 Students will understand that animals can be grouped in a variety of ways. Students will be able to identify animals classified as fish. Students will be able to identify characteristics of fish.
Objectives:
 Students will be able to identify four characteristics of fish. Students will be able to compare and contrast humans and fish.
Materials:
 at least 3 pictures of fish and 3 pictures of other animals (taken from books/magazines) What's It Like to Be a Fish? by Wendy Pfeffer, illustrated by Holly Keller pencils computers with Microsoft PowerPoint
Introduction:
 Conduct a whole group discussion about the characteristics of fish. Fish have the following characteristics that separate them from other animals: fish are cold-blooded, fish live underwater, fish have gills, and a fish's body is covered in scales. Look at pictures of different animals (alligator, octopus, shark, etc.), and identify the fish based on the characteristics discussed.

Practice:
  Review with students the characteristics learned the previous day. Read, What's It Like to Be a Fish? This book combines clear text and bright pictures to explain the difference between humans and fish. Afterwards, ask students to share and discuss what they learned from the book. Explain to the students that they are to complete an interactive presentation with a partner. Divide students into pairs and hand out the Fish Compare/Contrast Sheet (see Materials ). Model how to access the PowerPoint presentation and look for the information. Have pairs complete the interactive presentation and sheet.
